LADY KILLER: Prika Amaral, the brazilian Endless Ambition

2010. Siamo a Sao Paulo, una delle città più belle e colorate del mondo. Se Belo Horizonte molti anni prima ha visto sorgere l’alba di una grande band per cui il Brasile si è assicurato il posto nell’Olimpo della musica estrema, questa città sta per diventare testimone della nascita, per mano di una giovane chitarrista, di un’altra grande band, totalmente al femminile, che avvierà una vera e propria rivoluzione facendosi spazio, a suon di gomitate e di tour all’estero, nello stesso mondo dominato da lunghe barbe e timbri possenti. Abbiamo deciso oggi di andare ad intervistare quella chitarrista, dalle chiome bionde e dalla plettrata veloce, che nelle proprie capacità, nelle propria band e nella propria musica non ha mai smesso di crederci da allora. E soprattutto nel proprio sogno, che si chiama ancora oggi Nervosa.
Siete pronti per scoprire il mondo di Prika Amaral?

Ciao Prika, sei la Lady Killer di questo mese. Come stai?
“(Prika) Ciao! Tutto bene qui, grazie per questa opportunità e per avermi invitato a Metal Hammer Italy!”
Sei la fondatrice di una delle più importanti band thrash metal femminili di tutti tempi, Nervosa: penso che questa chiacchierata possa iniziare proprio da qui. Secondo l’annuncio di qualche mese fa, voi ragazze vi siete date alla ricerca della sostituta di Diva proprio all’interno della band, passando la palla a te. Come voce definitiva del progetto, so che hai già anticipato le ragioni di questa decisione sui socials, ce ne vorresti parlare?
“Verso fine agosto ho ricevuto un’email da Diva che diceva che avrebbe lasciato Nervosa…Onestamente non me l’aspettavo ed è stata una sorpresa per me. Da quel momento ho deciso quindi di assumere e affrontare l’enorme sfida di essere la voce della band. Stavo evitando questo ruolo da tanti anni però non volevo cambiare cantante di nuovo, e per la prima volta ho provato ad immaginarmi nell’assumere il ruolo… Così, abbiamo fatto il tour in America Latina e dal fare i cori di sottofondo mi sono ritrovata a cantare un’intera canzone live, con la certezza e la consapevolezza di poterci riuscire di nuovo. È stato un lavoro super intenso, imparare a cantare in pochi mesi e suonare contemporaneamente la chitarra… ma è stato divertente! Mi piacciono le sfide e posso dire di sentirmi a mio agio in questa posizione.”

‘Endless Ambition’ è il primo singolo della nuova formazione: tu alla voce e alle chitarre, Helena Kotina all’altra chitarra, Hel Pyre al basso e Michaela Naydenova alla batteria. Ci sono stati così tanti cambiamenti nella storia della band dal 2010, come pensi che tutte queste esperienze vi abbiano plasmato?  A che cosa state lavorando?
“Nervosa finora è la band che è stata il più grande trampolino di lancio per rivelare al mondo del metal musiciste donne, e onestamente mi sento orgogliosa di questo.
Ogni persona ha i propri motivi per abbandonare la nave, non è facile essere musicista in generale, e nello specifico non è facile essere un musicista nel mondo del metal. È uno stile di vita intenso e a volte la gente non vuole, non può o non riesce ad essere così “intensa”. Nervosa è sempre stata una band thrash metal e lo sarà sempre. Chi mi vuole, o chi ci riesce, mi segua. Stiamo lavorando per essere sempre più thrash e per migliorare le nostre capacità.”
Parliamo di te… Si può dire che hai un rapporto speciale con la musica da quando sei nata… Quali band e artisti hanno influenzato il tuo stile?
“Le band che mi hanno formato come chitarrista sono state Metallica, Slayer e Sepultura, coloro che mi hanno fatto credere ancora di più a tutto questo sono Testament, Kreator, Vader, Possessed, Exodus, Pantera, ecc… Ma il mio spirito Rock n’roll è devoto anche a gruppi come Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Dead Kennedys, Napalm Death, Deep Purple…Mi è sempre piaciuta la musica spontanea, con una certa attitudine e stile…”
Sei una chitarrista autodidatta, il tuo picking è incredibilmente veloce. Come sei riuscita a creare questo sound e questa tecnica, a dir poco unica?
“Suono la chitarra con il plettro in una posizione abbastanza non convenzionale, e questo l’ho imparato naturalmente, non ho mai avuto nessuno che mi spiegasse come farlo… pensate che non avevo nemmeno internet o qualche video di riferimento per imparare. Provavo e controllavo quale fosse la migliore posizione per suonare bene e per sentirmi a mio agio, so che il modo in cui suono non sembra comodo, per me è super facile tenere questa posizione. Sin dall’inizio sono sempre stata ossessionata per il doppio picking, ho deciso di suonare la chitarra proprio per questo, quindi rimanevo nella mia stanza per ore a provare un sacco di riff casuali con il doppio e questa è stata una parte molto importante della mia formazione da musicista.”
Quali sono i tuoi riff preferiti?
“Adoro tutti i riff con il double o il triple picking! Tutti i riff thrash metal in generale sono fantastici! È il mio stile preferito e penso che questo si possa percepire dalle canzoni di Nervosa, anche se mi piace sperimentare altri stili, che rendono tutto più divertente, ecco perché Nervosa è una band Thrash Metal la cui musica è permeata da un connubio di generi diversi.”

So che è una domanda curiosa ma, vorremmo sapere qualcosa su Prika dietro le quinte. Che combini quando non suoni sul palco? Hai qualche tipo di… “endless ambition” per il tuo futuro?
“Quando non suono lavoro ancora di più, gestire una band è un grande impegno. Vivo al 100% per Nervosa, 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7. Sempre. E’ ciò che ho scelto e sono perfettamente consapevole del suo lato totalizzante… ma mi piace molto. “Endless ambition” è un termine che racchiude un significato negativo in sè, e lo si apprezza a fondo quando si varca il limite dell’ambizione, un qualcosa dal quale mi sono allontanata: ho abbandonato quello che era il mio lavoro in banca perché le persone attorno a me erano malate d’ambizione. Non c’è niente di male nell’essere ambiziosi se si mantiene un determinato equilibrio e se non coinvolge chi ci circonda. Quello che voglio nella mia vita è continuare a fare quello che amo, essere in grado di vivere grazie alla musica, avere una vita semplice e pagarmi le bollette.”
Come musicista donna, come vivi il tuo status di chitarrista famosa nell’ambiente musicale? Pensi che al giorno d’oggi si possa ancora parlare di “sessismo tossico”?
“Questo è un problema millenario causato, nella maggior parte dei casi,  dalla sfera religiosa, ma oggigiorno il mondo sta diventando sempre più ateo e grazie ad internet le donne sono più unite e hanno più voce in capitolo, quindi sto vedendo migliorare molto lentamente le cose.
La cosa più importante è prender atto di ciò e saper difendere noi stesse. Abbiamo ancora tanto da imparare, ma mi sento felice di avere voce in capitolo e di essere d’aiuto per molti attraverso la mia arte.”
Provieni dal Brasile, ma i tuoi genitori sono italiani, portoghesi e spagnoli. Qual è il tuo rapporto con il nostro Paese!? Hai un ricordo speciale con il pubblico italiano?
“Ho vissuto in Italia per alcuni anni e amo il paese, la cultura, la storia e le persone. Posso dire che l’Italia è il mio secondo paese. Nervosa ha Mia Wallace, lei è italiana e parlo sempre un po’ di italiano con lei. La mia pronuncia non è così buona ma se sei paziente riesci a starmi dietro. L’Italia è meravigliosa e ci siamo divertite con i nostri amici Methedras durante le scorse date.”
Ultima domanda… Siete pronte per iniziare il tour europeo? Che programmi avete per l’estate?
“Abbiamo alcuni spettacoli programmati prima dei festival  estivi…faremo tappa in Belgio, Regno Unito, abbiamo avuto appunto da poco tre spettacoli in Italia, e poi via verso il Copenhell, Gefle Metal Fest, Resurrection Fest, Metal Days, Wacken, Rock The Castle, ecc… e dopo l’estate uscirà il nostro nuovo album, quindi rimanete sintonizzati perché ci sono un sacco di cose nuove in arrivo.”

Hello Prika! Welcome to Metal Hammer Italian webzine, nice to meet you. How are you today?
Prika – “Hi! I’m fine and you? Thank you for the opportunity and to invite me for this interview.”
You are the founder of one of the most important all-female thrash metal bands of all time, Nervosa: I think that we can start from here. According to an announcement from the band one month ago, you girls have decided to find Satanica’s replacement from within the band. Going forward, you will also be the permanent voice of Nervosa: you already anticipated the reasons behind this decision on socials, would you like to talk about it?
Prika – “End of August I received an email from Diva saying that she would leave Nervosa, I was not expecting this and it was a totally surprise to me. So, from that moment I decide to assume and face the huge challenge of being singer of Nervosa. I was avoiding this from so many years, but this time I don’t want to change singer again, and for the first time I was seeing myself in this position. So, we did the tour in Latin America and I decided to do backing vocals again and including I was singing one entire song in the set, and on this tour I had the certainty that I could do it. It was super intense job, I mean to learn how to sing in few months and play guitar. But it was fun! I like new challenges and I have to say that I feel comfortable doing this.”
‘Endless Ambition’ is the first single of the new line up: you at vocals and guitars, Helena Kotina at guitar, Hel Pyre at bass and Michaela Naydenova at drums. There were so many changes in the history of the band since 2010, how did these experiences change the band? I mean…who was Nervosa yesterday and who is Nervosa, now? What are you working on?
Prika – “Nervosa is the band that most revealed female metal musicians in the world and I’m proud of this. Each person has different reasons to leave, is not easy be musician, is not easy be metal musician. It is an intense life style, sometimes the people don’t want or can’t make this so intense. Nervosa always was a thrash metal band And always will be. Follow me who want or who can. We are working in more thrash and to improve ourselves in our abilities.”
Let’s talk about you…We can say that you developed a special relationship with music since you were born…What bands and artist have been an influence for your style?
Prika – “The bands that formed me as guitarist was Metallica, Slayer and Sepultura, and then the bands that made me to be even more in this was Testament, Kreator, Vader,Possessed, Exodus, Pantera, etc… But my Rock n’roll spirit came also from bands like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Dead Kennedys, Napalm Death, Deep Purple, etc…I always liked spontaneous music, anything that is “pretending to be”, there was attitude there.”
You are a self-taught guitarist, your picking is incredibly fast.How did you develop your sound and your unique technique?
Prika – “I play guitar with the guitar pick in a different position, and this I did naturally, I didn’t have anybody to explain to me how to do it, and neither I had no internet to see videos how to do it. I was just holding and checking which way was sounding better and was more comfortable for me, even if doesn’t look comfortable, for me is super easy this way. But actually, I was always obsessed with double picking, I decided to play guitar because of this, so I was in my room per hours playing a lot of random riff with double picking, and this was a very important part of my guitar formation.”
Do you have any fav guitar riff to play?
Prika – “All the riffs with double or triple picking I love! All the thrash metal riffs are fantastic! Is my favorite style and I think you can see this in Nervosa songs, but also I like to play other styles too, it makes more fun, that’s why Nervosa is Thrash Metal band with a lot of different mixes.”
I know that’s a curious question but, we would like to know something about Prika behind the scenes. What do you do when you don’t play on stage? Do you have any kind of… “endless ambition” for you future?
Prika – “When I’m not playing I work even more, manage a band is a huge job. I live 100% for this band, is 24hs in 7 days per week ALWAYS. It’s what I choose and I understand that, is heavy but I really like. “Endless Ambition” talks about something bad, when you over cross the limit of an ambition and I don’t want this for me, I left a job in a bank because the people around were sick about ambition. There is nothing bad about ambition if we have equilibrium and If it is not affecting other people. What I want for my life is continuing doing what I love, be able to live from music, have a simple life and pay my bills.”
As female musician, how do you live your status of famous guitar player today in the music industry? Do you think that, nowadays, we can still talk about “toxic sexism” in the environment?
Prika –” This is a millenary problem based in religion most of the time, the world is getting more atheist and with the internet the women are more united and has more voice, so I see the things getting better but very slow. The most important thing is know how to recognize this and defend our selves in some how. We still have so much to learn but I feel happy to have voice and help in some how with my art.”
How is metal music received in Brasil? What’s your opinion about it?
Prika –” Brazil has one of the most important metal scene and one of the biggest in the world. What makes more difficult for us is our economy, the most part of the Brazilians don’t have money to spend in show and merch for the bands, and this make everything harder for the entire scene. But we always manage in some how to keep the flame there, I think that’s why brazilians are so present on internet, is the way to be in contact with metal without spend the entire salary in one international show. It is a very rich scene full of amazing bands. We have a very beautiful history in rock and metal. Brazil is a huge country, we have different regions with different cultures and this reflect in our music.”
You are from Brasil but your parents are from Italy, Portugal and Spain. What’s your
relationship with our country?  Do you have a special memory with the italian audience?
Prika – “I lived in Italy for some years and I love the country, the culture, the history and the people. I can say that Italy is my second country. Nervosa have Mia Wallace, she is italian and I always talk a bit in italian with her. My italian is not so good but if you are patience I can have a talk. Italy is wonderful and I was super excited to meet my friends from Methedras and make the 3 shows that we had in Italy last weeks.”
Last question…Are you ready to start the European tour? Any date in Italy? What are your summer plans?
Prika – “We have some shows before the festivals in summer. We have some shows in Belgium, Uk and 3 shows in Italy, and then we have Copenhell, Gefle Metal Fest, Resurrection, Metal Days, Wacken, Rock Castle, etc… and after summer we will release our new album, so stay tuned there is a lot of new things coming!”
