Fino a poco tempo fa le BABYMETAL erano considerate quel gruppo di idol giapponesi diventate famose per i propri ritornelli j-pop melodici cantati su sottofondi metal: noi di Metal Hammer Italia abbiamo maturato la consapevolezza, lucidi ed allo stesso tempo sbalorditi, di trovarci davanti ad un vero e proprio fenomeno del nuovo millennio con le sembianze di due minute ragazzine dai lineamenti asiatici, che con convinzione, professionalità e audacia, degna del più navigato dei musicisti metal, hanno creato un nuovo genere musicale.
Che piace, eccome se piace.
E non solo alle folle di giovani, curiosi ed inesperti alle sonorità dai toni cupi, ma a tanti altri artisti dello stesso mondo del metal che non hanno esitato a spendere parole di apprezzamento verso le nostre ragazze.
Ma chi sono quindi, queste famose e tanto acclamate BABYMETAL?
Beh di certo oggi sono anche le protagoniste della nostra rubrica al femminile, e quale modo migliore, se non tramite un’intervista, per scoprire qualcosa in più su di loro?
Cominciamo!
Ciao ragazze! Benvenute a Metal Hammer. Come vanno le cose in Giappone?
“(SU-METAL) Ciao a tutti, è davvero un piacere anche per noi!
Per ora va tutto bene, lo scorso gennaio eravamo di ritorno in Giappone ed abbiamo avuto la nostra ultima performance live…diciamo che siamo state fortunate in quanto al pubblico è stato permesso di scatenarsi, ovviamente con la mascherina addosso, in linea con con le ultime regole disposte dal governo in merito ai grandi eventi. E’ stato molto divertente veder cantare tutti in un grande circle pit…un dolce promemoria di com’erano un tempo e come sono tuttora le nostre performance live. Una cosa che mi ha reso incredibilmente felice.”
Facciamo un passo indietro, ritornando al vostro esordio. Possiamo dire che a quel tempo non avevate tutta questa confidenza con il metal: perché lo avete scelto come genere?
Secondo voi come viene ricevuto al giorno d’oggi e qual è il posto che occupa all’interno del panorama musicale?
“(MOAMETAL): Questa scelta non è dipesa da noi, il DIO FOX l’ha presa a suo tempo e sono sicura che ha ritenuto la decisione molto interessante. Personalmente mi sento incredibilmente onorata e felice di aver abbracciato questo genere e di suonarlo. Penso che il metal sia uno stile in bianco/nero: alla gente o piace davvero o semplicemente non piace. Ricordo che, al momento della nostra formazione nel 2010, ho percepito immediatamente il suo carattere forte e spaventoso.
Attraverso la mia esperienza musicale ho scoperto anche il suo aspetto divertente, quanto i suoi artisti siano davvero cortesi e gentili, ed allo stesso tempo convinti del loro mestiere, elementi che mi hanno attratto sempre di più. In qualità di BABYMETAL spero di arrivare a condividere e comunicare le stesse esperienze ed emozioni che abbiamo vissuto e spero di colmare quell’enorme divario, così visibile all’apparenza, attirando sempre più fan ad amare questo incredibile genere musicale”.
Finora avete lavorato con molte band, la vostra fama è cresciuta esponenzialmente negli ultimi anni. Jeff Walker dei Carcass, pionieri del metal britannico, ha detto che “si stava abituando all’idea di ciò che le BABYMETAL stavano creando“; “sono incredibili!”, ha continuato il frontman dei Korn, Jonathan Davis.
Gary Holt degli Exodus ha detto a proposito di voi che “le ragazze hanno molta più energia di molte altre band metal che hanno ammesso di non supportarle“.
Qual è il vostro rapporto con queste band? Pensi che le opinioni da parte di altre band in merito al vostro progetto siano cambiate nel corso del tempo?
“All’inizio ricordo che abbiamo ricevuto un sacco di critiche che dicevano che “le BABYMETAL non sono metal!” Iniziando però ad apparire nelle locandine di vari festival metal, molti artisti sono venuti ad assistere alla nostra performance e proprio mentre eravamo in pausa al catering, alcuni di loro si sono avvicinati per complimentarsi, dicendo che lo show era “super cool!”. Anche se in generale gli artisti metal sembrano un po’ più seri e spaventosi sul palco, abbiamo avuto prova che sono tutti in realtà molto accoglienti e gentili. E per di più, siamo state fortunate a ricevere proposte lavorative da parte di molte leggende come ad esempio l’opportunità di affiancare sul palco il chitarrista dei Korn, Brian.
Inoltre, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di incontrare molti altri musicisti grazie al nostro terzo album ‘METAL GALAXY’: abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di esplorare oltre i nostri parametri musicali e collaborare con i talenti più vari. Ci teniamo a dire che siamo grate a tutti coloro che hanno espresso il loro interesse verso la nostra musica: è grazie a loro che siamo state in grado di divertirci così tanto”.
Avete condiviso il palco con il leggendario Rob Halford..che emozioni dà un’esperienza del genere?
“Ricordo bene quella volta in cui abbiamo eseguito “Painkiller” e “Breaking the Law” proprio con Rob Halford. Vederlo esibirsi da vicino mi ha lasciato senza parole: è una leggenda del metal!
Allora eravamo ovviamente molto più giovani e non potrò mai dimenticare com’è stato gentile e disponibile…si è addirittura ritagliato del tempo per parlare e suonare con noi. Ha un cuore così grande e lo ammiro tanto. Ricordo di aver letto in un articolo di METAL HAMMER dove Rob diceva che gli piacerebbe cantare con noi “Gimme chocolate!!” o “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!” e mi domando ancora se non ha cambiato idea perchè mi piacerebbe davvero molto. Sarei così felice di esibirmi di nuovo con lui!
E’ una figura molto importante per noi perché ci ha illuminato la strada. Amo la nostra amicizia”.
Chi è la vostra fonte d’ispirazione più grande?
“(SU-METAL) I METALLICA. Vederli suonare dal vivo è la ragione per cui mi sono innamorata del metal. Ricordo ancora chiaramente quella sensazione elettrizzante, come se la loro musica arrivasse direttamente al cuore e non alle orecchie… Ricordo di essermi detta: “così ‘questo’ è il metal! Davvero forte e intensa, come musica! Quello fu il momento in cui mi sentii immediatamente attratta da questo genere!”.
Quali sono le vostre band preferite nel mondo del metal? C’è qualcuno che vi ispira anche al di fuori?
“(MOAMETAL): Ce ne sono così tanti….per citare qualche nome: adoro i Judas Priest, i METALLICA, i Sabaton con cui, tra l’altro, andremo presto in tour…
Recentemente ho ascoltato “So Called Life” di Three Days Grace e “ZOMBIFIED” di Falling In Reverse.. Oh e anche “Take the Time” di Dream Theater e “One More Light” di Linkin Park. Amo molto anche i Bring Me the Horizon!!
Scusa lo so, ce ne sono così tanti haha.
Oltre a questo, ho scoperto recentemente i Måneskin. Sono Italiani giusto? Sono così cool.. E mi piace pure il fatto che abbiano anche qualche canzone in italiano. Sono sicuramente i miei preferiti fra coloro che ho scoperto recentemente!”
Che cos’è kitsune? Che significa per voi?
“(SU-METAL): Significa “volpe” in giapponese.
Le volpi, fin dai tempi antichi, erano i messaggeri degli Dei nei santuari in Giappone.
La loro storia è antica all’interno della cutura giapponese, appaiono pure molto nei miti del nostro paese.
All’interno del nostro progetto esiste una divinità custode chiamata DIO FOX che gioca una figura molto importante. Lui è l’unico a sapere cosa riserva il futuro a BABYMETAL”.
Molti considerano la musica come fonte stessa di ispirazione: siete d’accordo?
“(MOAMETAL) La musica è ciò che mi ha creato e ciò che mi mantiene viva.
A seconda della musica che ascolto ho la possibilità di espandere i miei punti di vista ed i miei orizzonti e di scoprire una parte di me stessa che non sapevo nemmeno esistesse. Un’altra cosa che amo è la gente che ho incontrato attraverso essa. La musica è assolutamente essenziale per me e senza di essa non saremmo di certo state intervistate da METAL HAMMER ITALIA , giusto?
Ecco perché l’amo ed intendo continuare ad amarla!”

Hello girls! Welcome to Metal Hammer Italia! It’s a pleasure to talk with you. How are you doing? How are the things going in Japan?
SU-METAL:
Hello guys, thanx for having us!
In January, we had our comeback performance in Japan and we were lucky at the time because the audience were permitted to scream and shout with their masks on according to new government regulations enforced on big events.
I had such a fun time seeing everyone sing together and making huge circle pits. It was a sweet reminder to what BABYMETAL’s live performance is all about and I just felt so incredibly happy!
Let’s start from the beginning. Back in the days, you girls weren’t so familiar with metal music:
why did you choose this genre and how is it placed in the worldwide music scenery, in your opinion?
MOAMETAL:
I was summoned by the FOX GOD so I personally don’t know how I ended up in this genre.
I’m sure the FOX GOD thought it would be an interesting idea. I am incredibly honored and happy to have met this genre and perform it. I think metal is a genre that is either black or white: people really like it or they really don’t. At the time of our formation back in 2010, my first impression of it was that it was very loud and scary. But through my experience as BABYMETAL, I’ve discovered the fun aspect of this genre and have come to know that metal artists are super warm and kind but also super serious in their craft and these elements really drew me into metal. I hope as BABYMETAL, we can share and communicate that same experience we went through and hope to bridge that gap, drawing more fans into liking this amazing genre of music.
You have worked with a lot of bands, your fame has grown exponentially over the last few years.
Jeff Walker of British metal pioneers Carcass said that he was “starting to warm to the idea of what BABYMETAL is doing“; “Oh this is amazing!“, continued Korn frontman Jonathan Davis.
Exodus’ Gary Holt said about BABYMETAL that your girls “have more energy than a lot of metal bands that don’t like them“.
What is your relationship with these bands? Do you think that opinions shared by other bands about your
project have changed over the time?
SU-METAL:
In the very beginning, we received a lot of criticism saying that “BABYMETAL is not metal!”
But as we started to appear in metal festivals, a lot of artists came to see our performance and as we were grabbing a bite at catering, a lot of artists came up to us and commended us on our performance saying that “it was super cool!”.
Although in general metal artists give off a bit of a serious and scary edge on stage, they all are actually very welcoming and kind people. And what’s more, we’ve been lucky to receive offers from various legendary artists while also having the opportunity to perform on stage with Korn’s guitarist Brian.
Also, we’ve been fortunate to meet so many artists and with our 3 rd album METAL GALAXY, we were able to explore beyond our musical parameters and collaborate with several artists. We’re grateful to all the artists who have expressed their interest in our music and it is thanks to them that we’ve been able to continue to have so much fun with metal music.
You shared the stage with an authentic metal icon such as Rob Halford. What are your feelings about this?
MOAMETAL:
I vividly remember that time when we performed “Painkiller” and “Breaking the Law” with Rob Halford.
Seeing him perform up close left me speechless. He is such a metal legend! Back then, we were obviously much more younger than we are today and even then, he was such a gentleman and would take the time to talk to us and practice with us. He has such a huge heart and I really look up to him. I think I remember seeing on an article from METAL HAMMER that Rob mentioned that he would love to join our performance in either “Gimme Chocolate!!” or “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!” and I wonder if he still wants to because I’d love to make that happen! I would be so happy to perform with him again! He is such an important figure for us because he showed us the way and I cherish our friendship.
Who inspired you most as an artist?
SU-METAL:
METALLICA.
Seeing them perform live is the reason why I fell in love with metal.
I still clearly remember that electrifying feeling as if their music spoke directly to my heart and not my ears…and that intense sound that shook my heart… I remember saying to myself, “so ‘this’ is what metal music is about! Everything is so powerful and intense!” That moment was when I became drawn to metal music.
What are your fav bands in the metal world? And outside it?
MOAMETAL:
There’s just so many. To list off a few, I love Judas Priest, METALLICA, Sabaton whom we will tour with soon… Recently, I’ve been listening to “So Called Life” by Three Days Grace and “ZOMBIFIED” by Falling In Reverse. Oh and “Take the Time” by Dream Theater and “One More Light” by Linkin Park. Also I absolutely love Bring Me the Horizon!! Sorry I just have so many haha. Other than that, I’ve been listening to Måneskin a lot. They’re from Italy right? Their music and their composure are just so cool. And I love that they have a few songs in Italian. They are definitely one of my recent favorites!
What is ‘kitsune’? What does it mean to you?
SU-METAL:
It means fox in Japanese. Foxes have served as messengers to the gods in shrines since ancient times in Japan. They appear frequently in Japanese myths and they have a long history within the Japanese culture. In BABYMETAL, a guardian deity named the FOX GOD plays a very important figure as He is the only being who knows what the future holds for BABYMETAL.
In your opinion, how is metal music received in your country?
MOAMETAL:
There are metal festivals that are held in Japan but I think they are relatively small compared to the ones overseas. Before being a part of BABYMETAL, I personally did not know what metal was so I’m sure there are people like me who’ve never heard it before. I think it’s interesting that although metal is not mainstream, the genre has such a super core fan base. I’d love for more people to know about metal. I love that music has no restrictions and I think it would be great if people give metal a try. And I hope BABYMETAL can help contribute to spreading the popularity of metal music.
Music itself is a source of inspiration: how does it work for you?
MOAMETAL:
Music is what created me and what keeps me alive. Depending on the music I listen to, it allows me to expand my views and even lets me discover a part of myself that I never knew existed. Another thing I love about music is the people I’ve met through it. Music is absolutely essential to me and without music, we wouldn’t have been interviewed by METAL HAMMER ITALIA right? That’s why I love music and I intend to continue loving it!
